The collection consists of three handwritten pages, comprising an acceptance speech given by Peary upon his graduation from Bowdoin College. The speech, addressed to Dr. Mason, gives warm thanks for a two-volume set of Goethe's Faust, translated by Bayard Taylor, presented to him as a gift from his townspeople. His theme is the power of words, and he laments his inability to employ words sufficient to express his feelings on the occasion.

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
